As a Christian, how do I reflect the light of God to the people near me?

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer (Romans 12:12).

Beyond Contentment

During February I need to escape from winter, and I often search out spring at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Today I walked directly to the familiar fountain and stone statue of Saint Francis of Assisi in the North Garden because the scene seemed to beautifully illustrate Jordan Feliz‘s song, Satisfied, that was filling my heart and my head.

I: The Loneliest Letter

As a teenager I began to notice beautiful monograms and lettering in magazines, which led me to the study and practice of calligraphy, or decorative handwriting. I employed variations of both the Gothic (blackletter) and italic scripts to address envelopes, personalize award certificates, and create frameable wall art.

My dream was to someday create illuminated letters, such as those pictured in the photos below from my copy of J. R. Rosen’s print of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Isn’t the intricate detail amazing in a letter less than an inch tall?

A Lesson from Pie: Mothering and Mentoring

I’m thankful I finally learned how to make a beautiful, delicious pie. On a cold day in January the oven warms our home and the fragrance fills the house with a promise of good things to come.

The sun rose at 7:48 this morning and the temperature was -9° Fahrenheit. On these bitterly cold, dark mornings I easily slip into silent complaints or audible grumbling.

But that’s not how I want to spend the winter months. So I decided to celebrate 30 days of Thanksgiving starting now, just like some people choose to do during November to extend the celebration of Thanksgiving Day. I’m going to cultivate a heart of gratitude to God during the difficult days of winter.

Today I’m thankful for warm layers.
